The American Power Act: If Not Now, When?

This afternoon, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) held a conference call updating business leaders on the progress of the American Power Act (APA) passage.  Senator Kerry has taken time out of his schedule every few weeks for over the past year for these update calls; a sign of the hard work and outreach that is needed to develop and pass key legislation.

The implications of the Gulf disaster lends more urgency for Congress to pass this bill. The Peterson Institute’s economic assessment of APA states that the law will create 200,000 new jobs per year for the next 10 years and result in a 40 percent reduction on foreign oil dependence.

APA applies to companies emitting 25+ tons of emissions per year.  Roughly, that only includes two percent of companies operating in America; 98 percent of companies are exempt.  As such, various communities (not usually mentioned in the same sentence) are in support of passage – national security leaders, faith-based leaders and environmental groups.

It also appears that some Republican Senators are moving in support of the bill:  Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Senator George LeMieux (R-FL), Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH).

Please contact these Senators to let them know there vote is crucial to passage – the American Power Act is about our future – it creates jobs, bolsters national security and is a giant leap in environmental stewardship.
