Controller Requires Cities and Counties To Report Salaries

In a response to the recent City of Bell salary scandal, State Controller John Chiang has ordered that all California cities and counties post executive salaries online.

Chiang said in a prepared release that posting the information on the department website “will make sure that excessive pay is no longer able to escape public scrutiny and accountability.”

Current law requires cities and counties to report summary financial information to the controller each year by Oct. 15. The new rules Chiang announced today will expand that reporting requirement, allowing the salary information to be posted on the controller’s website in November.

Chiang’s move follows Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s call last week for cities and counties to report salary information.
